Welfare Assistance

If you know of anyone who is experiencing financial distress help is available as below.

  • For existing MSD clients or NZ residents needing financial support please ring Work and Income on 0800 559 009. Open 7am-6pm (Mon-Fri), 8am-1pm (Sat), Sun closed.
  • The Government Helpline is available to help people who aren’t sure who to talk to: please call 0800 779 997. Open 8am-5pm, 7 days a week.
  • Foreign nationals who do not qualify for other support can still access support through CDEM Groups – contact them through the Government Helpline.
  • For people who need support to find short term temporary accommodation due to COVID-19 please call MBIE’s Temporary Accommodation Service on 0508 754 163 to register.

Grocery Delivery Service

If you are in self-isolation or have no other way to access food, The SVA Grocery service is available nationwide. Visit and phone 09 801 2122 (9am and 4pm Monday — Friday).

RSA Support Services Team

If you find yourself, or a veteran you know in need of assistance with shopping, medication pick-ups or deliveries or anything else, please contact your local district support manager to arrange the help required.

For support with anxiety, distress or mental wellbeing

You can call or text 1737 to talk with a trained counsellor for free, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

For questions about your child or baby’s health or wellbeing

Call Plunketline if you have questions about your child or baby’s health or wellbeing on 0800 933 922 and speak to a Plunket nurse. Plunketline runs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week

Financial support

If you’ve lost your job or can’t work at the moment you may be able to get a benefit or some other financial help. And whether you’re working or not, if you’re struggling to meet your living costs or get an unexpected bill, you may be able to get assistance. Even if you don’t think you qualify, call Work and Income to talk about your situation on 0800 559 009 or visit
